Red Junglefowl, Gallus gallus
Red Junglefowl, male, 6/16/07, Haena, Kauai, HI
The Red Junglefowl, native to Southeast Asia, is the ancestor of all domestic chickens; they were brought to the Hawaiian Islands, perhaps already semi-domesticated, by the Polynesians. On Kauai, a good number of more or less pure Junglefowl roam wild around the island; this one looks to have more a mixture of domestic chicken strains than some I have seen, but it was the best one I photographed.
