Violet-crowned Hummingbird, Amazilia violiceps

![]() This beautiful hummingbird is common in Mexico, but rare in its limited United States range in southeastern Arizona, where the best place to see it has long been the back yard of the house formerly occupied by the late Wally and Marian Paton in Patagonia, Arizona, the setting for this photo. The Patons maintained feeders and welcomed birders from all over the world to sit in their yard and see rare birds, most famously this one. As of Spring 2014 it appears that the property has been purchased and the Paton back yard will be maintained by Tucson Audubon Society; thanks to all those who have made this possible! |
