Trumpeter
Swan, Cygnus buccinator

This Trumpeter Swan, presumably a male because it is
displaying, was one of a pair on Jim Lake in Palmer,
in the Mat-Su Valley west of Anchorage, on my visit
to Alaska, a place we were taken to by Wasilla bird
guide and photographer Doug Lloyd, an excellent
guide and very good company.

Trumpeter Swans are a
specialty of the Greater Yellowstone area; I found
this pair in the
Centennial Valley, a remote and beautiful area west
of Yellowstone Park
in Montana. I could only shoot this pond from the
road, quite a
distance, so I wasn't able to get a photo as sharp
as I would have
liked, but I was delighted to have my first view of
this species.
