Toucan Barbet, Semnormis Ramphastinus

Toucan Barbet
This gorgeous barbet is thought to resemble a toucan, hence the names, both common and scientific; the toucan family is the Ramphastidae, with the barbets, Captonidae, their closest relatives. Toucan Barbets are not easy to find, but Ridgely and Greenfield report that the "Mindo and Tandayapa region" is one of their "strongholds," and that was where we saw this fellow, at the Paz family's private refuge.
