Snowy Egret, breeding plumage, 3/13/05, Palo Alto Baylands Park
These breeding birds show the plumes that were once so sought-after as decorations for ladies' hats that they almost did this species in. Palo Alto Baylands duck pond developed an active heron nesting colony in its surrounding palm trees in 2004 and succeeding years, where many of these pictures were taken; Great Egrets and Black-crowned Night-herons nested there as well.
