Red-necked Grebe, Podiceps grisegena

Red-necked Grebe
We regularly have a small number of Red-necked Grebes every winter in the SF Bay Area, but I'd never photographed one until my first visit to Alaska in spring of 2011. They were abundantly present in their bright breeding plumage, courting and nesting on the lakes in the Anchorage area, especially Westchester Lagoon, and also on Lake Lucille in Wasilla, where Doug Lloyd introduced us to the beauties of his hometown. On New Year's Day 2015, I finally was able to photograph a wintering bird of this species in Monterey Harbor, see bottom of page.
