Limpkin, Aramus guarana

![]() Limpkins are found throughout most of Florida, and only rarely elsewhere in the US. They look like large rails, and indeed are closely related to them, though even more closely related to the cranes. Their main food is the large apple snail, which is also the primary food of the Snail Kite; they also eat freshwater mussels, foraging mainly by walking in shallow water. They share their habitat with alligators, and give alarm calls -- part of their extensive repertoire of notably loud vocalizations, mostly given by males -- when one of these fearsome predators approaches. |
