Above adult male, with red patch; below, adult female with no red. Both are
feeding nestlings in the nest shown above, and also shown in several pictures
below. This Hairy Woodpecker nest provided great photo-ops to local birders
and photographers during May of 2008 .

Here's the juvenile male looking out of the nest hole shortly before he fledged. Note the extensive red crown feathers forward on the head; a female juvenile could have red feathers too, but they would not be as extensive or as far forward. Compare the adult male looking out of the same hole three weeks earlier, in the picture just below -- the adult male red patch is smaller and at the rear of the crown.
