Great Sapphirewing, Pterophanes cyanopterus
The spectacular Great Sapphirewing is the second largest hummingbird in Ecuador (to the Giant Hummingbird) and the male is beautiful as well in its deep blues and greens. It is the only hummingbird with blue wings, and they make quite a spectacle as the bird hovers with its relatively slow wingbeat. This is a hummer of the high mountains, and we were able to see lots of them amid magnificent Andean views at Yanacocha Reserve on the outskirts of Quito.
The female has some brown feathers on the head where the male has all green, and its wings have blue coverts but brown flight feathers where the male has all blue.
