Gambel's Quail, Callipepla gambelii

Gambel's Quail, male, 4/18/09, Pond at Elephant Head, Chino Canyon, AZ
The Gambel's Quail of the desert southwest resembles its near cousin, my state bird and backyard favorite, the California Quail, differing in the plain rather than scaled underparts, and the dark rather than light forehead.
