Black-backed Woodpecker, Picoides articus

![]() Black-backed Woodpeckers are uncommon and hard to photograph, so I was lucky that on my first bird photography trip to Yuba Pass, in the summer of 2005, I came upon a group of birders right by the highway viewing this active Black-backed nest. On my subsequent annual summer visits to the Yuba Pass area I'm yet to get another good view of this species, though I'm always looking. These birds tend to nest in recently burned forests. |
