Baird's Sandpiper, Calidris bairdii

Baird's Sandpiper
Baird's Sandpipers nest in the Arctic and wnter in southern South America. Their long migration flight is facilitated by especially long wings, visible in these three pictures. Adults migrate across the central plains of North America, only rarely straying to the coasts, while juvenile migration is centered in the plains but extends to both coasts. As a result my photos, from California and Connecticut, show juveniles only. The juvenal plumage, with dark central areas in feathers and white linings, produces a scaly look to the upperparts.
